Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Broadcasting has emerged as a powerful tool for poverty alleviation, providing information, education, and empowerment to marginalized communities. In Barkin Ladi Local Government Area, Plateau State, radio and television programs play a critical role in disseminating information on government initiatives, entrepreneurial opportunities, and financial literacy. Broadcasting serves as a bridge between policymakers and the public, fostering awareness about resources and programs designed to alleviate poverty. Studies have shown that broadcasting significantly contributes to poverty reduction by promoting education, skill acquisition, and access to economic opportunities (Yakubu & Danladi, 2023; Ibrahim & Joshua, 2024). This study examines the perception of broadcasting as a tool for poverty alleviation in Barkin Ladi LGA, exploring its effectiveness and challenges.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite the potential of broadcasting to alleviate poverty, its impact in Barkin Ladi LGA is limited by factors such as poor access to media, low-quality programming, and inadequate audience engagement. Additionally, there is a lack of empirical data on how residents perceive the role of broadcasting in poverty alleviation. This study seeks to investigate the perception of broadcasting as a tool for poverty alleviation in Barkin Ladi LGA, addressing these gaps and offering practical recommendations.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

1. To examine the content and themes of broadcasting programs aimed at poverty alleviation in Barkin Ladi LGA.

2. To assess the perception of residents regarding the role of broadcasting in poverty alleviation in Barkin Ladi LGA.

3. To identify challenges and opportunities in using broadcasting to alleviate poverty in Barkin Ladi LGA.

1.4 Research Questions

1. What content and themes are emphasized in broadcasting programs aimed at poverty alleviation in Barkin Ladi LGA?

2. How do residents perceive the role of broadcasting in poverty alleviation in Barkin Ladi LGA?

1.5 Research Hypotheses

1. Broadcasting significantly influences poverty alleviation in Barkin Ladi LGA.

2. The perception of broadcasting as a tool for poverty alleviation varies across different demographic groups in Barkin Ladi LGA.

3. Challenges such as poor access to media and low-quality programming affect the effectiveness of broadcasting in poverty alleviation.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study underscores the role of broadcasting in addressing poverty and empowering marginalized communities. By focusing on Barkin Ladi LGA, the research provides insights for media practitioners, policymakers, and development organizations. The findings will inform strategies to enhance the use of broadcasting as a tool for poverty alleviation.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study is limited to the perception of broadcasting as a tool for poverty alleviation in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area, Plateau State. It does not include other regions or forms of media.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

1. Broadcasting: The transmission of audio or visual content to a wide audience through radio or television.

2. Poverty Alleviation: Efforts and initiatives aimed at reducing poverty and improving the living standards of individuals and communities.

3. Perception: The way individuals interpret and understand a particular concept or phenomenon.
